Matt Rawnsley’s 450,000 km ride report

1990 you could say was the first of my ‘Big’ rides, though i did not know it at the time. Back than i was still involved with the Scout Association as a ‘Rover’. The Belair Rovers (my club) decided to enter the annual event – Great Bike Race – from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Dukes Hwy. We entered as a 4 man relay team and at the end we won our category.
Between 1990 and 1992 my cycling was very spasmodic, a total of about 5500 kms.
When i hit 1993, thinks got a little more serious. My first Audax ride was March 1993, first Audax 1200 in November 1994.
Some might say I went overboard for the 12 years between 2002 – 2013, covering over 300,000 – 25000 kms per year, not a bit!
I completed 18 x 1200s and 7 one thousand kilometers brevet rides.
My biggest being in October 2002 – 2000 Kms brevet ride – completed in 152 hours.
Most in a 24hr period – 680kms
Most in 1 week – 1600 kms
Most in 1 month – 3204 kms (100 times over 2000kms per month)

Outside Audax i had a racing career, popularly my biggest win was SA Classic Veterans Open Graded Road Race at Hahndorf (during the TDU) – B Graded in Jan 2007

PBP_49 – finshing PBP 2011 in 50h28m
PBP_56 – total exhausted and with a bit back pain PBP 2011
Picture 1298 – On a Audax NSW ride in Bundanno?
Audax SA 1200 Elizabeth finished Nov 1994 – Finished 1st 1200 and totally whacked!
SA Classic win – me in middle – (Kim Thomas on left) – I’m wearing the winners yellow jersey!
